What Happens in Our Sessions
Neurofeedback is a brain training tool that strengthens your brain’s ability to run the show well.
Neurofeedback is central to this practice, and right now I don’t take on clients who aren’t willing to do it.
If we don’t get the central nervous system out of the way and able to calm down, we can’t access our executive functioning, the part of you that plans, focuses, and holds things together.
Working directly with the brain is what makes the rest of the work possible.
You’ll still talk. CBT is my main talk approach, and that conversation happens right alongside the training.
Each session starts with me checking in on your week. I ask about specific symptoms so we can see what’s improved.
Then you practice a breathing exercise while I put the tiny sensors on your head.
From there, you watch a video or play a game while we talk through the concerns that brought you in.
Yes, and they’re all good ones. Most people notice better sleep, a calmer mind and body, and better self-awareness.
CBT is my primary talk approach. Alongside it, I draw on DBT skills, heart rate variability and breathing work, and elements of Internal Family Systems with teens and adults.
With athletes, I also do sports performance coaching.
Some of the work is simply paying attention to what your body is telling you.
How Often, and for How Long
Sessions are scheduled for 55 minutes.
Once a week is sufficient. Twice a week is ideal.
A minimum of 20, with most people doing 40. I’d rather you know that number going in.
Each brain is different. Time is needed for the brain to learn and to hold on to what it’s learning.
Who This is For, and How We Meet
All of my work happens in the office. The sensors go on your head, so the training takes place in the room with me, and there’s no online or remote option.
My office is at 1401 60th St SE, Kentwood, MI 49508, in the lower level of the Green Ridge Realty building.
Clients come to me from across Greater Grand Rapids and the Lakeshore.
Three groups make up most of my practice.
Parents bring in children who are melting down at school, hitting a sibling, and refusing to sleep in their own bed. Most of those families arrive hoping to find something that works without medication.
Student athletes, usually 16 to 22, show up anxious even though they’re hitting every goal they set.
Adults come in with anxiety, panic, flashbacks, disrupted sleep, migraines, or chronic pain, often after medication or talk therapy took them as far as it could go. What most of them want is the old version of themselves back.
I work with clients from age 4 through 65.
Children under 13 come in for neurofeedback rather than individual talk therapy with me. Many of them are also seeing an outside child therapist, and I work alongside them.
Parents are part of the work here. What you notice during the week at home, at school, and at bedtime tells me how the protocol is landing and what to adjust.
Plenty of people are already on medication when they start here. That’s okay.
What I ask is that you’ve been on it long enough to know its impact. If you can tell me what the medication is doing for you, we have what we need to start.
I’d say so. I enjoy an occasional nap on my couch and sleep like a baby.
A little About Me
I hold a Master’s degree in Counseling from Cornerstone University and I’m a Licensed Professional Counselor in the state of Michigan.
For six years, I practiced traditional therapy before running into neurofeedback. I started training in 2017 and earned certification in the Othmer Method in 2020.
